Rising from the ashes in the midst of worldwide upheaval, New York five-piece Catcher aren’t afraid to shake the table a bit, made abundantly clear with the release of their debut singles, ‘Yesterday’s Favorite’. Released as a double single alongside ‘The Skin’, their intense post-punk sound has already gained acclaim in a number of US outlets as the band builds towards the release of their debut album.

Chilling undertones and blaring noises set the scene at the opening of ‘Yesterday’s Favorite’ before the track bursts into action with rolling, distorted drums and a driving bass line which lay the foundations for lead vocalist Austin’s cutting, rasping vocal. Sculpting a dark, atmospheric soundscape with a combination of ambient feedback and riverbed out guitar lines over jagged fuzzy strummed chords, Catcher demonstrate an uncanny ability to create a thrilling yet complex soundscape that builds towards the tracks sprawling, haunting finale.

Talking on the track, lead singer Austin said: “Yesterday’s Favorite is a kind of reflective piece on 3 different memories of a person who is at the end of their life due to old age. I think this one came from the old man with dementia that I am a caretaker for. Although the stories are not his, I definitely had him in mind when I sat down to write this one.”

‘Yesterday’s Favorite’ is also released alongside a visual, a collage of hauntingly free domain documentary footage depicting a sculptor crafting sculptures bearing the likeness of religious idols further emphasising the bands esoteric image and sound.

Expressive and larger-than-life, Catcher cast a wide stroke, their debut singles calling on hallmarks of post-punk greats, while simultaneously adding an element of their individual flair to the genre. With acclaim from the likes of Brooklyn Vegan and Alt Citizen the band are building a reputation ahead of their US tour throughout July and August 2021. Cannily melancholic and shrouded in a cloak of darkness, ‘Yesterday’s Favorite’ is a sign of what to expect from Catcher with the debut album looming.
