To mark the 125th anniversary of the birth of Irving Berlin, a very special show comes to London’s Royal Festival Hall to celebrate the life and music of one of the greatest songwriters in American history.

During a 60-year career Berlin wrote an estimated 1500 songs, including the scores for 19 Broadway shows and 18 Hollywood films, with his songs recorded by artists including Judy Garland, Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion and Frank Sinatra.

As George Gershwin famously called him – “the greatest songwriter that has ever lived”.

Standards such as “White Christmas”, “Happy Holiday”, “There’s No Business Like Show Business”, “Lets Face The Music And Dance” and “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” have become the backbone to popular music.

The show presented by Leo Green is built on interviews that Irving Berlin undertook with his father Benny Green for BBC Radio and will also see Berlin’s daughter Linda Emmet take to the stage being interviewed about her father. The interviews will weave the music together providing a unique insight into the stories behind the songs.

“I'm very much looking forward to coming to London and attending the concert tribute to my father's work, From Rags to Ritzes," says Linda Emmet. "My father first travelled to London in 1910, and returned many times over the years. Of particular note was his time in London during the Second World War when he lead a company of his all-solider revue, This Is The Army, at the Palladium. His admiration for the British people only grew during this challenging time and it is gratifying to note how popular his music has remained with Londoners to this day.”

Leo Green comments- "Irving Berlin has given us so many of the greatest songs of all time, I cannot wait for the evening of January the 28th. This will be a very special night and I look forward to sharing the story of Irving Berlin and his music with the audience – it's an honour to be part of the 125th Anniversary celebrations".

Set to the backdrop of a full orchestra with a full suite of guest artists to be announced, from Rags to Ritzes will delve deep into the story of one of the definitive songwriters of the 20th Century.
