Demi Lovato has reached out to 5 Seconds of Summer after they beat her to a MTV VMA.

The two acts went head-to-head in the Best Lyric Video category, with the Australians up for their 'Don't Stop' clip and Lovato nominated for 'Really Don't Care'.

The section was voted on by the public and the two acts were close throughout the campaign.

5 Seconds of Summer ultimately won at Sunday's (August 24) event but Lovato was a gracious loser.

She tweeted: "#congrats5sos...That was a close one!!! Kudos to the 5sos fan base!! And I LOVE MY LOVATICS."

Lovato later added: "I'm SOOOO proud of @FifthHarmony...Seems like yesterday I watched their reactions to being formed to a girl group. I love you girls SO MUCH!"
