Demi Lovato: 'Getting fit has given me real mental strength'

Songstress Demi Lovato has revealed that getting herself back into health and fitness has been wonderful for her mental health and wellbeing.

The 'Cool For The Summer' sensation told E! News that she wasn't motivated by losing weight and instead was drawn to the strength side of overhauling her lifestyle:

"That's what this whole lifestyle change was about. It wasn't necessarily to lose weight, although that's a byproduct and it's awesome, but for me, I needed to get in that mental strength because that's what I felt I was lacking and needed to be strengthened."

Earlier this month, she told People magazine that she wants to work to remove the stigma that's so firmly still attached to mental health issues: "I went through several years of pain and suffering, and I want to be able to help people and help try to prevent that suffering from happening."

"I think it's important that people no longer look at mental illness as something taboo to talk about. It's something that's extremely common, one in five adults has a mental illness, so basically everyone is essentially connected to this problem and this epidemic."
