Demi Lovato: 'I only had four texts when I got out of rehab, it was a wake-up call'

Singer, actress and X Factor USA panelist Demi Lovato has confessed that going through a stint in rehab helped her to reevaluate her life.

During a new interview with Company magazine, the 'Skyscraper' beauty explained that when she sought treatment in 2010 for "physical and emotional issues", which included self-harm and an eating disorder, she expected more support from people she originally considered to be friends:

"A couple of months before I went to rehab, I had a birthday party and there were a couple of hundred people there. It was full of people who I considered my closest friends.

"When I turned my phone on after being in rehab for three months, I expected lots of text messages and phone calls. I had four texts. That was a wake-up call. I have severe trust issues but I try not to be jaded."

Referring to her circle of friends now, Lovato added that it's much smaller but is tighter and more real than ever: "I don't have loads of friends. I used to, but then I realised, do any of them actually care?

"Now I have people who, if I break my leg in the middle of the night, they'll come to the hospital with me. Or they'll answer the phone at 4am if I need them."

She also dismissed rumours that suggested she had dated One Direction's Niall Horan and stressed that she isn't interested in gossip: "I don't care about Taylor Swift's love life. I don't care about Harry Style's love life. I care about mine. I find it weird that people are so obsessed with other people's love lives!"

The issue of Company magazine Lovato features in, and also graces the cover, will hit newsstands on May 8.
