Demi Lovato: "My parents tried to control me"

Teen star, Demi Lovato, has revealed in the January 2014 issue of Nylon magazine, that her parents tried to control her. The 21-year-old told the glossy:

"My parents tried to control me, but I'd be like, 'Oh really, I'm grounded? Well, I pay the bills.' "They did the best they could. And I think that's why a lot of young stars struggle when they're making money or providing for their family."

Speaking about her history of self-harming, the former Disney star said:

"I would like to separate myself from being the girl who overcame her issues, I don't want people to hear my songs on the radio and be like, 'Oh, that's the girl who cut.'"

With blue hair in the Nylon photo-shoot, Lovato explains that when she left rehab, her parents asked her how she wanted her absence from the public eye be explained, she said:

“They were like, 'How do you want to handle this? We can say it's a personal time and we don't have to tell them what you're in here for, or we can just be 100 percent honest and show them that you can get through it and other people can get through it, too.'"

Lovato believes her honest and true-to-herself approach has gained her the best fan support. She credits that honesty for the bond she now has with her fans:

“I have probably the best relationship between any artist and their fans, because I have no secrets."
