Drake gave Rihanna plenty of affection at the MTV VMAs this weekend by kissing her on the cheek on stage.

The reported couple got close at the New York event on Sunday (August 28) as the Canadian gave Rihanna the Video Vanguard award.

He said that he has been "in love" with Rihanna since he was in his early 20s.

Drake also praised the singer's artistic qualities.

He said: "She is someone I’ve been in love with since I was 22-years-old.

"She’s one of my best friends in the world. All my adult life I’ve looked up to her."

Drake added: "What’s most impressive isn’t the endless list of stats, awards or accomplishments.

"She succeeds by doing something which no one in this music industry does - and that’s be herself."

He appeared to lean in for a kiss, but Rihanna ended up dodging the lips and instead embraced him.

Rihanna meanwhile performed four times on the night.
