Squadron Leader George ‘Johnny’ Johnson, MBE, DFM the last surviving Dambuster

celebrates his 101th birthday on November 25 th 2022.

On 16 May 1943 Johnny took part in OPERATION CHASTISE “The Dambusters Raid”. The plan was to destroy a number of Adolf Hitler’s dams in western Germany. This would disrupt water and power supplies to factories in the Ruhr valley and deliver a devastating blow against the Nazi industrial war machine. With great effect.In May 1943 Johnny was a 21 year old bomb aimer in 617 squadron and on that night of the 16th “The Dambusters raid” Johnny and his crew were briefed to attack the Sorpe dam and as “BOMB AIMER” Johnny was responsible for dropping the specially designed Bouncing bomb.

After the Dambusters operation Johnny went onto fly a further 19 operations with 617 squadron. He then operated as an instructor in Bomber Command until the end of the Second World War. After the Second World War he served with 100 Squadron and 120 Squadron Coastal Command. In 1962, after a period in the Far East and a final UK tour Johnny retired from the RAF as Squadron Leader. Moving into a successful career in Education and Mental Health, Opening THE GEORGE JOHNSON EDUCATION CENTRE In Lincoln On May 16th 2023, 360 Studios Ltd and 3RD Coast Books are planning to honor George ‘Johnny’ Johnson and his contributions beyond his military career at RAF SCAMPTON using the original 617 Squadron Bomber Command hanger and also launch productions such as “KAPAUN’S BATTLE” and other related productions to Honor our hero’s.
