Ed Sheeran's 'x' named UK's top selling album of the year

Ed Sheeran's 'x' has become the best-selling album of the year so far in the UK.

The singer-songwriter released the record in June and it enjoyed a series of weeks at No.1 in the country.

The Official Charts Company have now confirmed that it has shifted 634,000 units since it was released, making it the year's top seller so far.

At No.2 on the list is Sam Smith's debut 'In The Lonely Hour', which has sold 487,000 copies.

Coldplay's 'Ghost Stories' is a close third, with 'Caustic Love' by Paolo Nutini and Paloma Faith's 'A Perfect Contradiction' completing the top five.

Speaking about the news, Ed Sheeran commented: "I’m so happy people have been enjoying my album so much - great to hear that it’s still the biggest seller of the year and has now gone double Platinum too.

"Looking forward to playing it live to my UK fans when the tour starts next week!”
