Ed Sheeran's 'x' named top selling album of 2014 in UK

Ed Sheeran's 'x' was the best selling record of the year in the UK in 2014.

The singer released the album in June and it has sold over 1.7 million units in the country to date.

The BPI have confirmed that this means it is the top selling record over the last year in the UK.

Sam Smith's 'In The Lonely Hour' meanwhile is the second most popular album, with the debut effort shifting over one million units.

George Ezra's 'Wanted on Voyage' and Paolo Nutini's 'Caustic Love' follows on the best selling list.

It is the first time that the UK's top ten best selling albums of the year have all been created by British artists.

Some of the other top sellers include One Direction, Olly Murs and Pink Floyd.
