Ed Sheeran is celebrating after reaching another massive sales milestone in the US.

The singer-songwriter released his second album 'x' in the summer of last year.

Recording Industry Association Of America have now confirmed that the record has gone double platinum.

They wrote on Twitter on Thursday (December 17): "Congratulations to @edsheeran!

"x is 2X multi-Plat, 1 of 4 albums since 2014 to earn multi-Plat!"

The other albums mentioned in the tweet are Taylor Swift's '1989', Sam Smith's 'In The Lonely Hour' and Adele's recent effort '25'.

Sheeran meanwhile recently stated his intention to quit social media for around nine months.

He said: "I've had such an amazing ride over the last 5 years but I find myself seeing the world through a screen and not my eyes so I'm taking this opportunity of me not having to be anywhere or do anything to travel the world and see everything I've missed."
