Ed Sheeran addresses substance abuse struggles on tonight's Jonathan Ross Show

Ed Sheeran has opened up about his year-long break from the music industry, after he announced in October last year that he was going on a hiatus.

The crazy-talented English star has released three albums since 2011 and his latest, 'Divide', sold 232,000 more copies in its first day than any other album in 2016.

Speaking about his break on last night’s (October 20) Jonathan Ross Show in the UK, Sheeran explained that he was struggling with substance abuse issues after the pressures of fame just became too much.

The singer-songwriter said frankly: "Some people took me to one side and were like, ‘Calm yourself down'.

“All the pitfalls that people read about, I just found myself slipping into all of them. Mostly, like, substance abuse.

“I never touched anything. I started slipping into it, and that’s why I took a year off and buggered off."

The Jonathan Ross Show episode with Sheeran speaking openly about his struggle is set to air tonight at 10.20pm on ITV. Also on the show is an all-star line-up that includes Rita Ora and Gordon Ramsey.
