For the past decade, Superchief Gallery has been committed to supporting underground artists and elevating them to the global stage. Founded in 2012 by Edward Zipco & Bill Dunleavy, Superchief has emerged as an essential vehicle for the art & culture needs of some of the biggest names within the Web3 ecosystem while maintaining their commitment to the fringe art community.

This June, look for Superchief Gallery to mark their 10 Year Anniversary with their annual Mega Anniversary Summer Group Show opening June 11 at their brand-new Los Angeles warehouse gallery and June 17 at their New York gallery, the 1st NFT Gallery in the World. Details will be announced soon.

The Lore

Superchief Gallery started as group art exhibitions in Brooklyn, NY and BBQs every Sunday as a way for the community to gather and connect. “The goal is to unite the underground and enable the genius that is abundant there.” says Zipco.

Over the past 10 years, Superchief has had nine different gallery spaces in New York, sometimes as many as three at a time. They also had a large warehouse gallery in Miami that closed over the pandemic, and a Los Angeles warehouse gallery that was tragically lost to a fire after six years of consistent high level exhibitions.

In 2016, Superchief opened their first digital art gallery in Soho, New York. This space focused entirely on digital-native artists as a way to establish digital artwork as a legitimate voice in the art scene & discourse.

The Intersection of Art & Technology & Community

In March 2021, Superchief Gallery NFT officially opened the world’s first physical IRL NFT gallery with their inaugural collection Season 1 Starter Pack. This collection broke more than $1 million in sales.

What drew Superchief to this burgeoning market was the revolutionary innovation of royalties for artists. Unlike the traditional art market, NFTs on the blockchain enable artists to receive royalties on the secondary market, continuously getting them paid as their work is sold and resold.

Aware of the ecological impact of cryptocurrency, Superchief Gallery NFT has been committed to staying carbon-negative since day one, by offsetting carbon emissions at a 3 to 1 rate through an organization called Pachama and has vocally encouraged others to do the same.

After the grand opening, Superchief Gallery NFT garnered the attention of over 250 international newspapers and magazines. The news of the first IRL NFT gallery was featured four times on network news in just a single week.

Thanks to their display partner WHIM, Superchief Gallery NFT presents artwork on digital canvases specifically tailored to presenting digital art at its finest. With WHIM, Superchief Gallery NFT has been able to show new NFT collectors what it feels like to actually “live with digital artwork” as the artist intended.

Superchief began 2022 with finally re-opening the Los Angeles gallery that tragically burned down in 2020. With a warehouse twice the size as before, Superchief Gallery LA is adopting a cutting-edge hybrid gallery model, showcasing both NFTs and traditional art. This new space aims to establish a cultural meeting space by closing the gap between the two worlds with their signature giant art shows as well as NFT exhibitions, private events, & IRL minting.

“Part of what makes the scene around the LA gallery so special is that it really welcomes all kinds of people. It’s not dominated by one particular clique in the art world, like you find in a lot of other galleries,” says Superchief Gallery Co-Founder and LA Director Bill Dunleavy. “We make sure that our community represents a wide net: muralists, graffiti artists, filmmakers, photographers, digital artists. People keep telling us that we left a big void in LA when we went away. Now we’re back!”

For the Community & the Culture

Superchief Gallery NFT has been proud to have hosted exhibitions with iconic artists such as Swoon, Jake Fried, Martha Cooper, Driftershoots, Claire Silver, Parker Day, Justin Aversano, Lucien Samaha, Ron English, IRAK Graffiti Crew and many more.

Featuring 100 photographers and 400 photos, the show is curated by Superchief co-founder Bill Dunleavy.
