Bitter:Sweet returns with an emotionally charged new single today (March 21) with “Rise.” It is a personal and raw track penned by Bitter:Sweet co-founder Shana Halligan in the final days before the passing of her father, GRAMMY awarding-winning Blood, Sweat and Tears founder Dick Halligan.

Talking about the track, Shana Halligan says: “I wrote it for my father shortly before he passed away. We were very close, but toward the end, he withdrew and hid his struggles from me, which was heartbreaking. He lost his identity without music and distanced himself at a time when I couldn’t reach him. I was travelling to Italy to see him but didn’t arrive in time, leaving our goodbye unfinished. I sent him this song as a way to connect”.

Like many others, the Los Angeles-born artist witnessed the recent devastating wildfires in her city, which caused her to experience this song from another perspective, “I hope that after all the heartbreaking devastation caused by the fires, the song can give people the strength to be the phoenix that will "rise from the ashes.” For dramatic effect “Rise” features string arrangements from friend and fellow artist Serj Tankian of System of a Down.

Since their critically acclaimed debut, Bitter:Sweet has masterfully blended bold beats with lush melodies, carving out a signature cosmopolitan fusion that captivates listeners. In 2006, the Los Angeles pioneering pop & trip hop act dominated KCRW airtime with songs like “Dirty Laundry” and the title track from their debut album The Mating Game. Flash forward almost two decades later, Bitter:Sweet–now helmed by singer-songwriter and founding member Shana Halligan–will return with a brand new album Baby Is Back set for release April 25 featuring “Rise” and its previous single and title track “Baby Is Back.”
