Today, Russian protest art collective Pussy Riot release their debut mixtape MATRIARCHY NOW on Neon Gold Records (MARINA, Charli XCX, Christine and the Queens etc.) featuring new single “PRINCESS CHARMING” with Salem Ilese. The release comes just before the 10-year "anniversary" of their August 17, 2012 verdict of being convicted with hooliganism motivated by religious hatred, and spending 2 years in jail for protesting Putin.
Last night, Pussy Riot kicked off the project with a sold out release show at The Independent in San Francisco ahead of their weekend festival set at Outside Lands Festival. On August 10th, they will headline Los Angeles’ El Rey Theatre, which sees REI AMI opening, and more high-profile guests to be revealed early next week.
The mixtape features collaborations with Tove Lo (who executive produced the project), Salem Ilese, Kito, Hudson Mohawke, Slayyyter, ILOVEMAKONNEN, Big Freedia, REI AMI, Phoebe Ryan and more. Last month, Pussy Riot announced the project with "PLASTIC" featuring ILOVEMAKONNEN alongside the official music video, directed by Haley Bowman BELOW.
"PLASTIC" and the mixtape follows Pussy Riot's latest political action last June 9th, in which they hung a 45 foot MATRIARCHY NOW banner from the third floor of the Texas State Capitol to protest the national attack on reproductive rights. Plus Nadya Tolokonnikova has played an instrumental role in setting up LegalAbortion.ETH - the frictionless Web3 donation address that benefits seven organizations protecting reproductive rights.
Nadya's Web3 efforts helped to raise over $500K so far for reproductive rights non-profits, including Planned Parenthood and the National Center for Reproductive Rights. In February, at the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, she was instrumental in raising $7M via UkraineDAO. On Gender Equality Day / International Women’s Day, she announced UnicornDAO, which has so far raised over $4.5M to collect and showcase art from women-identified and lgbtq+ artists. Besides Yuga Labs (Bored Apes), these people and companies are part of the DAO: Guy Oseary, MoonPay, World of Women, Beeple, Jen Stark, Ppl Pleaser, Trippy, IX Shells, Justin Aversano, Grimes, Sia and Gary Vee etc.
Pussy Riot furthered their notoriety with a collection of singles across the last few years, such as the project “Make America Great Again” which was eerily recorded and the video shot before Trump was elected president. “RIOT” along with the Nadya Tolokonnikova-directed video, as well as “HANGERZ” a project on female reproductive rights. “Police State” (featuring Chloe Sevigny in video) and “1312” are projects against police brutality; "1312" stands for "ACAB", "all cops are bastards". “НОЖ” / “KNIFE” is a project against domestic violence, which was released alongside Pussy Riot's "STOP DOMESTIC VIOLENCE" award.
Ever since their release from prison, Nadya Tolokonnikova and Masha Alekhina founded MEDIAZONA, Pussy Riot’s independent publication focused on Russian courts, law enforcement, and the prison system.
