Greyce talks to Josh Thomas about 'Dare To Dream': "It was quite amazing how natural and quickly everything fell into place!"

Whilst in preparation for the release her video ‘Dare To Dream’, British singer-songwriter Greyce caught up with Josh Thomas from Green Shirt Music to talk about the story behind the inspiration and making of the Video.

Can you describe the track?

Dare to Dream is an honest and stripped back song with a clear message: don’t give up, and never stop trying. The creation of it started off with a simple conversation with Nathanael on the phone where he had said he wanted us to work on a song together. He then sent me a short audio of his piano composition the length of a verse & chorus later that evening. From there it all worked like clockwork. The lyrics came straight away, as well as the feeling. It was quite amazing how natural and quickly everything fell into place!

Nathanael’s first inspiration for the song came from his listening to Lianne Las Havas’ Lost & Found. He had wanted to create a song along that theme. I on the other hand was inspired by the simple word “dream”. I remember at the time I had asked him, “what do you want the song to be about?” and he had answered “write a song about dreams”. We were both inspired differently but came together to create a song that could inspire others.

What was the inspiration behind the video for Dare to Dream?

After writing the track and hearing the final product we knew we needed to create a video. I think the sole inspiration for the video came from actually sitting down and just listening to the words of the song. Dare to dream wasn’t directed to just one person, it was made for anyone and everyone and we needed to find a way to capture and portray that. When we started scripting we had so many different ideas for the video. Different ideas on locations, objects, characters, etc. but one thing that my mind kept on going back to was my own journey through music, and how there has been so many times I myself have wanted to give up. I believe that this is where some of the inspiration for the video came from.

What was it like making the video?

Making the video was a great but extremely tiring experience. Nathanael and I had the joint stress of working both behind the scenes and in front of the scenes from start to finish. We’re so happy for the result, especially because only we know how hard we worked to get it to this point. We funded the project ourselves, scripted the video, re-scripted the video, casted for the video, chose the location for the video, “acted” in the video, assisted in the editing of the video, and did much more before finally getting to the point where we could actually enjoy the video!

Shooting the video for Dare To Dream was a wonderful experience. We worked alongside the director Francesco Bori and he gave us a lot of laughs throughout the day which made everything seem quicker. I have so much gratitude for all the people that took part in the video shoot, both in front of the camera and behind the scenes. The shoot itself lasted a half-day and it was amazing having so many special people involved.

Where can we next see you live?
