Jake Bugg says shows like American Idol are 'dream smashers'

Jake Bugg believes TV talent shows like American Idol end up breaking the dreams of hopeful singers.

The British singer-songwriter appeared on the US programme earlier this year to perform live but it seems his time on the show was a sour one.

Speaking to BBC Newsbeat, the 'Shangri La' star said that he went on just before someone was eliminated from show - something which he called a "cruel" turn of events.

Bugg said: "It was quite sad. We went on just before they said to the contestant 'Yeah you're not through' and she was really heartbroken. It's cruel. It's like, 'Thanks for coming on the show but you'll never get a record contract'. It's the dream smasher, that's what it is, the dream smasher."

The young Brit meanwhile lost out to David Bowie in the Male Solo Artist category as this year's BRIT Awards.
