John Mayer: 'I'm a recovered ego addict'

'Gravity' hitmaker John Mayer has revealed that he's learning how to control his ego problem.

During a new MSNBC interview that aired in part on 'The Today Show' this morning (March 6), the crooner explained that as a 'recovered ego addict' he is actively keeping out of the spotlight and avoids after-show parties or places where he will be faced with temptation:

"I'm a recovered ego addict, and the only way that I can be sure that I don't relapse is to admit that I constantly have this ego addiction, every day. So I do the Grammys and I go home because if I stay, I get high again."

He went onto address some of the kiss-and-tell interviews he has done in the past and confessed that he realises now that it wasn't smart to speak so candidly about his romantic life: "I went, 'All right, dude, you did a couple interviews where you were out of touch and you were being a ham -- and you were basically break dancing into a nitroglycerin plant, right?'"
