John Mayer has lavished praise on Miley Cyrus' surprise new album.

The singer released Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz for free in August.

The record saw the US star team up with the Flaming Lips to produce some emotional, left-field work.

Writing in a series of tweets published overnight, Mayer said that the album is full of "genius".

He said: "We never get to see ourselves sleeping peacefully next to the ones that we love'. I’m totally transfixed by this Miley Cyrus album.

"This is why I love music. You can be one artist one year and the next discover some crazy light inside yourself and shine it everywhere.

"This Miley album is amazing. You can’t try to make something like this. You just tap the vein and don’t question a single instinct. 'Self control/ is /not something I’m working on' sung heroically and melodically. Come. On.

"Okay. I’ll stop tweeting about it now. Comes down to this: This is a masterwork of whack genius. #whackgenius."
