Union Chapel presents ‘Notating The World’, a series of free online music workshops, aimed at ages 14-16, exploring the world of music notation, presented by Organ Scholar Jay Richardson.

The series of online classes will explore graphic and text scores, creative uses of staff notation, the sonification of numeric data sets, notating for the organ, aleatoric writing and interacting with performers. Bringing in works from Nico Muhly to Pauline Oliveros and from Cathy Berberian to John Cage, the course takes a refreshing look at the art and science of musical notation for all those interested in sound, regardless of their musical background.

Sessions are streamed on YouTube every Wednesday at 3pm. There will be an opportunity at the end of the course to write a 5 minute piece for solo organ and a selection of these pieces will be played at a recital when the Chapel reopens.

Speaking about the programme, Claire M Singer, Music Director of the Organ said, “Since the Chapel closed its doors we have been looking at the many ways we can bring elements of our organ programme Mixture online. At this difficult time it’s important that we empower the next generation of creatives to stay engaged with their musical studies during lockdown.”

Workshop Schedule on YouTube:

Saturday 18th April, 10am, Notating for the Organ

Wednesday 22nd April, 3pm, Expect the Unexpected [Expanding Horizons]

Wednesday 29th April, 3pm, Drawing Sounds

Wednesday 6th May, 3pm, Music from Prose

About

About Union Chapel’s Organ Programme:
Our organ programme Mixture at Union Chapel has been engaging with the local community and beyond of all ages since 2012 when our historically unique organ was restored through the Heritage Lottery. Our focus since then has been to change perceptions of what the organ is capable of and bring it to the forefront of contemporary music creation through a diverse organ programme of education and performance. Now in its 8th year the programme has been recognised as one of the most innovative forward thinking and engaging organ programmes in the country.
