After impressing earlier this summer with their previous single, “Swooning On You”, which went on to receive much acclaim, NYC band Blak Emoji have returned with their enthralling new single, “Float”. The track was produced by Blak Emoji frontman, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Kelsey Warren, who has once again elevated the group’s sound to dazzling new heights.

Speaking more on the release, Kelsey says, “‘Float’ is basically a celebration of living. I felt this way previously, but when the pandemic hit last year it really forced me to be thankful and take advantage of what I have in life, which is a lot of good. We all get older and life flies by so why not make the best of it and seize the moment? Do whatever you can or want without hurting anyone, including yourself.”

With “Float” continuing their signature genre-spanning sound, the band have appropriately categorised the track as “eclectro”, which also doubles up as the title for their anticipated forthcoming album, which is due for release 1st October. “‘Eclectro’ pretty much sums up Blak Emoji’s music to a tee, especially the new album”, says Kelsey. “It's predominantly electronic based but also harmoniously blends pop, R&B, alternative, experimental and even folk. Sometimes electronic music gets pigeonholed into only two or three categories like dance/EDM, chill or experimental. I try to expand electronic music beyond expected categories as much as possible. I just make an effort to do it in an eclectic way, but it's not forced. Expect many programs, bleeps, blips, beats and synths mixed with electric/acoustic guitars, piano and strings.”

Impressing with its unique sound and style, “Float” looks certain to continue what has already been a fantastic year for the band. And if it’s any indication for the rest of the album’s quality, Eclectro is going to be an album to watch out for and not to be missed when it drops later this year. “Float” is available to buy/stream now on all platforms: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/blakemoji/float.

About

Blak Emoji is the brainchild of NYC producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Kelsey Warren and bandmates Sylvana Joyce (keyboards/vocals), Bryan Percivall (bass/bass keys) and Max Maples (drummer/arranger). Blending pop, soul and R&B inspirations with an added emphasis on electronic music, synth sounds and intricate writing, Blak Emoji offer something unique and fresh. Their debut EP, INTRO (2017), was the first of several releases, with two albums and a sophomore EP released since then and now a third album, Eclectro, is due to be released 1st October 2021 following singles “Mechanism”, “Swooning On You” and new single “Float”. The band have received acclaim from the likes of Rolling Stone, Afropunk, Wonderland and The Line of Best Fit and have heard their songs featured in several independent films, as well as ABC's Quantico.

The eclectic sound of the band can be traced back to Kelsey’s childhood, where he was immersed in soul, R&B, pop and rock music growing up in South Jersey. And after learning piano concertos, jazz guitar standards, drums and other instruments, Kelsey threw hip-hop, punk and minimalist classical into the mix, which took his sonic journey to new destinations. His music taste expanded further with a dense love of electronic music, dance music and synth inspiration from Kraftwerk to Prince to NIN.

The past year has been a particularly memorable one for Kelsey. In 2020, he miraculously managed to assemble a brief European solo tour, a solo NYC residency and direct a political music documentary. And quarantine didn't prove to slow him down either, spending the duration of the pandemic producing for numerous artists, directing music videos and releasing an avant-electronic instrumental album, Antidote. In the midst of it all, he’s been recording the upcoming Blak Emoji album, and much like the rest of the world, he is more than ready to return to live performances in the near future, so the band are set for a big 2021/2022. “Float” is out everywhere now on all platforms.
