Where: King’s Place, King’s Cross, London N1.

Attending this session will give you a clear idea of how all the parts of the music business fit together; it will also deliver a foundation on which to build understanding of specific areas of the business to be explored in subsequent courses.

The course will be presented in an accessible and user-friendly style, with the emphasis very much on small group sizes with plenty of scope for interaction. The tone is one of informed practical experience and direct engagement.

Ian Ramage and Ann Harrison will present the Overview course and between them they will cover the following topics:

What the modern music business looks like, how it functions.

How to monetise your efforts - where does the money come from?

What rights do you have?

Who are the key members of your team? The role of the manager, agent, lawyer and accountant.

The changing complexion of music modern companies.

The opportunities for independent music making.

How do the A&R, marketing and promotion functions operate?

What are the key moving parts of the live business, of sponsorship and marketing and what impact 360 degree deals has had on this area of the business?

And how all these elements come together to help you get on in the business.

The course is open to all those with an interest in the business of music, from those outside looking inquisitively in, to those who may have an idea of how particular parts of the industry work who want to gain perspective and see how their role fits in to the overall picture. It will also appeal to musicians and songwriters in need of the inside track on the business and to budding entrepreneurs or marketing people who want to know more about the unique terrain of the music industry and what it may hold for them.

Course outcome: The organisers say that if you attend this course you will be in select company, you will come away with a good working overview of the modern UK music business and with heaps of ideas of what you might do next.

Music Business Courses will be running follow on courses on topics such as artist management, the record business and independent releases, music publishing, putting on a live show and 21st century funding sources, marketing and promotion. Attendance on the Overview course will be a good foundation for these more in-depth courses.
