Barcelona-native, 22-year-old Jay Blanes moved to London in July 2019 to become a full-time musician. Passionate about many genres, such as pop, jazz, indie, rock or R&B, Jay recently decided to focus his efforts on commercial indie-folk and is about to start releasing a few singles that will lead to a sound-defining EP later this Summer. The first single is the upbeat Natalie – out now across all download and streaming platforms.

Jay Blanes is a multi-faceted talent: he records, programs and mixes instrumentals and vocals for all his songs and even directs, produces and edits his music videos. His biggest influences include Ed Sheeran, Kodaline, Coldplay, Pablo Alborán (Spanish), Joan Dausà (Catalan), James Blunt, Damien Rice, Shawn Mendes or Dean Lewis.

At a very young age, Jay was convinced by his grandmother to take a few piano lessons but it was not until he attended a music summer camp that true love for music started to ignite his bones. In 2012, he began sharing covers with the world on YouTube but was also preoccupied with completing his degree in business administration. Two years later, at an Ed Sheeran concert, Jay became newly energised and inspired and that summer he refocused his musical ambitions and wrote and produced what would become his debut EP Found in April.

During a five-month stay in LA, he became a regular performer on the Santa Monica Pier, performed at USC and collaborated with some notable producers. Now based in London, he is writing, producing and sound engineering- and can’t wait to get back to his love of performing live once the UK lockdown is lifted. Although independent with a busking-based income, Jay has managed to gather +15,300 followers and +264,000 streams across all platforms (55k on Spotify, 124k on Youtube, 84k on Instagram videos).

Natalie is the first single off his forthcoming EP and is a happy, positive, upbeat folk-pop- song about love at first sight, the sweetness of a first date and wanting that person to stay with you. He says of the track:
The song came to me naturally and quickly while jamming sitting on a bench at University of Southern California, right before a Songwriting class. Natalie is a journalism student I fell for at USC. Our first date was magical: we met after I busked at the Santa Monica Pier, walked to its end -where some dancers were performing- and witnessed a beautiful sunset. Then it went dark and saw lightning storms in the horizon, went for dinner in an Asian restaurant, I spilled my glass of water all over me, and then sang her some songs to gather the strength to kiss her.

The music video has a few scenes at Jay’s home: kitchen, living room, shower – largely due to the lockdown in Spain. The original concept had to be re-imagined to obey the new directive of “staying at home”. But this does lend the video a kind of charm and innocence in his flirty appeals to ‘Natalie’ to stay, join him and – who knows - have a wonderful future together!
