In the UK there are currently more than 1,000 open cases where a body has been found, but not identified. In this week’s episode, ‘The Missing’ explores one such case now under investigation by the team at Locate International, unsolved since 1979. Listen here.

On 21st February 1979, the body of a man was discovered on Porth Minick beach on St. Mary’s, the largest inhabited island in the Isles of Scilly. The initial investigation was unable to ascertain his identity, and for decades the case has remained unresolved. Now, Locate International are examining the case, alongside twenty-two others, with hopes of finally providing answers for the missing man’s family and loved ones. Among the small clues available to the team was an inscription on the man’s wedding band reading ‘Giorgios and Katrina 1956’.

In episode four of ‘The Missing’, Locate International investigator Emma Tilley discusses how the team are tracing marriage records, pursuing leads from the public and have even tracked down the unknown man’s final resting place. As the team make an international breakthrough, could it be that they’ve finally identified Giorgios?

Created in collaboration with UK charity Missing People and community interest group Locate International, the first series of ‘The Missing’ entered the UK podcasting charts at Number One in true-crime and Number Two on the Apple UK podcast chart, receiving widespread critical acclaim from the likes of Harper’s Bazaar, The Observer, The Sunday Times, The Daily Mirror and Stylist. As a result of awareness raised by the podcast, Goldsmith’s University has now assigned a specialist team to investigate the case of missing mother Lana Purcell, and a former police detective is currently working with the police to explore a viable theory put forward by listeners in the case of Suzy Lamplugh.

Previous episodes in this series of ‘The Misssing’ have explored the cases of Terry McSpadden, Chad Gibson and Natalie Putt, while Series One examined the cases of Charles Hovarth-Allan, Katrice Lee, Bernadette Cooper, Andrew Gosden, Fatima Mohamed-Ali, Suzy Lamplugh, Lana Purcell, Anne Simpson, Tony Haigh and Esra Uryun. Listen to previous episodes here.

‘The Missing’ is a Podimo podcast series produced by What’s The Story? Sounds and made in association with specialists Locate International and Missing People.
