Meghan Trainor explains Grammy acceptance speech tears

Meghan Trainor has opened up about why she burst into tears at the Grammy Awards.

The singer won the Best New Artist prize at the event on Monday (February 15).

However, her speech saw the US star in tears as she was struck by emotions.

Speaking to Variety, Trainor said she felt the award recognised her place in music.

She revealed: "It feels unbelievable. I still can’t breathe.

"I’ve been crying ever since I got off that stage. I always wanted to be an artist, to be the face of the music, so to be named best new artist means more to me than anything in the world."

Speaking on Instagram post-show, Trainor said it was some words from her father that set her off.

She said: "Can't believe what happened. My dad whispered, 'You made it,' before I walked up and I lost it. I love my family so much. Without them I wouldn't be here today.

"Thank you to my team and everyone who got me here. Gonna cry happy tears all night. AHHHHHH!"
