ALFONSO CUARÓN’S ROMA TO BE RELEASED IN 70MM
OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE
NEWS PROVIDED BY
Academy Award® winning director and writer Alfonso Cuarón’s ROMA, produced by Esperanto Filmoj and Participant Media, will have a 70mm film exhibition in select theaters. These special presentations are in addition to the Netflix theatrical engagements that began last month. The innovative roll-out has allowed consumers worldwide the opportunity to experience the film theatrically, both before and during the film’s global streaming release.
The 70mm special presentations include:
Los Angeles: The Egyptian - January 10-11
“ROMA is designed to be meaningful whether experienced at home or on the big screen but offering cinema lovers the opportunity to see it in theatres is incredibly important to me,” said Cuarón. “The 70mm print of Roma shows unique details not available on any other version. Being shot in 65mm, these prints bring live detail and contrast only possible using a big format film. It is for sure the most organic way to experience ROMA.”
A ‘70mm film’ is actually shot on 65mm negative in camera, but exhibited on 70mm print. This higher resolution format is twice the size of standard 35mm, with an inherently widescreen aspect ratio. Cuarón shot ROMA on the Alexa65 digital camera, mastering at 4K resolution. FotoKem, the only remaining 70mm print lab worldwide, handled the transfer from digital to film, as well as the production of 70mm film prints.
ROMA’s exclusive limited theatrical presentation began in the United States and Mexico on November 21, and has now been shown in about 150 theaters in the United States and nearly 600 more overseas, selling out theatres in New York, Los Angeles, Mexico City, London and Toronto, among others.
The film premiered earlier this year at the Venice Film Festival where it took home the Golden Lion for best film. Since then, it has played in nearly 70 film festivals to great acclaim worldwide. The film has received numerous accolades, including recently being named Best Picture of the year by the New York Film Critics Circle and the Los Angeles Film Critics, a prestigious award from the American Film Institute and 3 Golden Globe Award nominations. ROMA is on over 70 top ten lists from various film critics groups and is number one on 33 of them.
The most personal project to date from Academy Award®-winning director and writer Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity, Children of Men, Y Tu Mama Tambien), ROMA follows Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio), a young domestic worker for a family in the middle-class neighborhood of Roma in Mexico City. Delivering an artful love letter to the women who raised him, Cuarón draws on his own childhood to create a vivid and emotional portrait of domestic strife and social hierarchy amidst political turmoil of the 1970s. This is Cuarón’s first project since the groundbreaking Gravity in 2013.
