BRETT HALEY TO DIRECT AULI’I CRAVALHO IN “SORTA LIKE A ROCK STAR” FOR NETFLIX

Director: Brett Haley (Hearts Beat Loud)

Haley most recently directed the musical comedy Hearts Beat Loud starring Nick Offerman and Kiersey Clemons. He is currently in post-production on All The Bright Places starring Elle Fanning and Justice Smith. Based on the internationally bestselling novel by Jennifer Niven, the feature will be released by Netflix in 2020.

The Gotham Group and Temple Hill last collaborated on The Maze Runner films for Fox.

The Gotham Group has previously collaborated with Netflix on Kodachrome. They are currently in production on Henry Selick’s Wendell & Wild for Netflix.

Cravalho is best known for her role as the voice of “Moana” in Disney’s Academy Award nominated and Grammy Award winning animated feature. She can most recently be seen in NBC’s drama series Rise.

Logline: Sorta Like a Rock Star follows a teenage girl who, despite her difficult circumstances, is preternaturally optimistic about the world and her place in it. She often helps those around her, resulting in powerful bonds with a disparate group of outsiders in her community, until she faces a devastating loss and can no longer ignore the challenges in her own life.
Principal photography is set to begin this October

About Brett Haley

Brett’s film Hearts Beat Loud stars Nick Offerman, Kiersey Clemons, Ted Danson, Sasha Lane, Blythe Danner, and Toni Collette. The 2018 Sundance film was released Friday, June 8th by Sony International and Gunpowder & Sky with a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Brett also wrote and directed The Hero which premiered at Sundance in competition last year. The film came to theaters on June 9th and stars Academy Award Nominee Sam Elliott who gives a tour de force performance. Previously he wrote and directed I’ll See You In My Dreams starring Blythe Danner that premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival.

He has recently broken into the TV space, directing an episode for the upcoming Hulu limited series Looking For Alaska, based on the award winning novel of the same name. The series was developed and created by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, and is being produced by Paramount TV, Fake Empire, and Temple Hill.

He is currently in post on his next film, All The Bright Places for Netflix, which stars Elle Fanning. Up next, he will direct Sorta Like a Rock Star, which is set up at Netflix with The Gotham Group and Temple Hill producing.
