Nick Jonas on Zayn Malik quitting 1D: 'I feel for their fan base, but I commend Zayn's self-respect'

'Chains' hitmaker Nick Jonas is the latest music star to weigh in on Zayn Malik's untimely departure from One Direction and he confessed that leaving a band or group behind is an incredibly hard thing to do.

Speaking to the Rolling Stone magazine, Jonas, who was part of the now disbanded trio Jonas Brothers, explained that the 'Story Of My Life' sensation made a bold choice and he respects how difficult that must have been:

"I think that sometimes you’ve got to make those tougher choices, and I commend him for being honest with himself and doing what’s important for him. I made a similar choice myself and I feel like it was a good decision to make because I sort of fell into my truth as an artist and as a person. That’s all you can hope for. I feel for their fan base, but it’s probably what’s best for him and that’s all that he can think about."

'This Is Us' director Morgan Spurlock recently confessed to HuffPost Live that he saw Malik 'struggling' when they worked on the movie so wasn't surprise to learn that he had left the boyband:

"He always struggled with being on the road. He's a homebody. He wanted nothing more than to sit in his house and spray paint and draw and do art, and I think this explosion that happened to him -- which was something none of them ever predicted -- but I think he was the one who struggled with it the most. And being away, being on the road, being away from his girlfriend I think finally just got to him, and I think he said, ‘I'm done.’"
