Nick Jonas: 'Cancelling North Carolina gigs was the right thing to do'

Nick Jonas has defended his and Demi Lovato's decision to cancel shows in North Carolina over the state's recently passed anti-LGBT law.

The pair confirmed in April that their two gigs in Charlotte on June 30 and in Raleigh on July 2 had been called off in protest of the 'Bathroom Bill'.

The law forces transgender people to use gender-specific restrooms and it has come under fire.

Speaking on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, Jonas said the duo's decision wasn't taken lightly because of the number of disappointed fans.

However, they felt that it was the correct thing to do.

Jonas said: "It’s an incredibly frustrating situation overall. We are very aware of our strong LGBT community fanbase and the support they’ve given us and the support we want to give them.

"And this was a time where I feel like we said we have to make a bold statement, put our foot down and stand firm in something we believe in and it’s unfortunate for the fans there and for us because we want to go play as many shows as possible.

"But in our minds it’s the right thing to do. and hopefully our fans will stand united with us.”
