Ex-Bauer digital lead takes helm ahead of November’s 70th anniversary celebrations

The Official Charts Company are delighted to announce the appointment of Carl Smith as Editor of OfficialCharts.com.

Smith joins the Official Charts brand team from Bauer Media where he has been Digital Lead at Heat for the past five years, and previously Hearst brand Sugarscape. He replaces long-standing editor Rob Copsey, who departed the business at the end of 2021 following a seven-year tenure.

Carl will take the reins on digital content plans and delivery, assuming responsibility for the continued expansion of the Official Charts digital audience, maximising 70 Years of the Official Singles Chart while evolving content and social media strategy to reach a new generation of chart followers. He will report into Head of Brand & Digital, Lauren Kreisler.

The key hire comes at an important milestone in Official Charts’ brand development journey - ten years since the company underwent a major rebrand and pivot in their communications strategy.

The end of 2011 saw the Official Charts Company undergo an identity overhaul and launch editorial platform OfficialCharts.com – the online home of the UK’s Official Charts, 70-year chart archive, official music news, interviews and new releases listings.

At the same time, the now-iconic Number 1 Award was launched; in the decade since, the trophy has made it into the hands of droves of the world’s biggest artists, from Kylie to Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa, Stormzy, Barry Gibb, Little Mix, Pharrell, Foo Fighters, P!nk, Paul McCartney and more.

Along with many more successful brand developments since, these initiatives have transformed the Official Charts communications model over the decade, reinforcing The Official Chart as the definitive measure of popularity in music, and opening a new world of powerful promotional opportunities for artists and labels in the process.
Carl’s arrival kickstarts Official Charts’ further brand revamp plans ahead of the 70th anniversary of the Official Singles Chart, coming in November 2022 - among many other exciting developments.

In tandem, Helen Ainsley is promoted to Marketing and Communications Coordinator, while recruitment for a Social Media Producer is also underway to complete the team that will deliver what is set to be a huge year for the Official Charts brand.
