Following the release of recent single ‘Water’, unveiled earlier this year in July, German-born singer-songwriter and producer Matilda Eyre returns with her newest offering, the raw and emotionally vulnerable indie-pop single, ‘Let Me Be’.

Despite the havoc caused by the global pandemic and being unable to return to her London base during the beginning of lockdown, Matilda Eyre has been anything but idle during her quarantine. With no other option but to move back in with mum and dad for the remainder of her stay, Eyre took the time to cleverly convert her father’s trailer into a DIY garden studio and an all-round creative hub for all her musical exploits. It was in this makeshift studio that Eyre’s cup of creative juices began to overflow. Concepts for songs and music videos emerged, lyrics were scribbled and re-written multiple times and most significantly, Matilda Eyre’s #100DayProject was born.

Determined to make the most of her free time, this artist channelled her energies into creating music on a daily basis, writing small songs and creating self-made, mini music videos or animations to accompany them, which she would then go on to release on her YouTube channel under #The100DayProject, which gained her a loyal following of fans.

This period of isolation was a particularly significant turning point for Matilda Eyre not only as a musician but also as a human being, she coined this special phase of her life “returning home to myself / reclaiming my strength and power”. The time away was spent on introspection, self-discovery and unrestricted creation which was something that Eyre soon found she was yet to have experienced. The inability to perform at live shows due to COVID-19 partnered with the freedom to create music unencumbered by deadlines, expectations or outside influences was both a unique and freeing experience; an experience which quickly lead to the creation of a lot of new and wholly authentic material including her newest single, ‘Let Me Be’.

“‘Let Me Be’ is a song about the excruciating wish to be your authentic self, to be loved the way you are, to be seen for your true self. 'Let me be all the things washed away.' The song is reflecting on all the ways we change ourselves to fit in and to be accepted. Remembering your strength, your essence and returning home to that. It is a call to step into your truth and authenticity when people or situations ask you to abandon yourself.”

The lyrics in this new song embody Matilda Eyre completely, revealing her innermost thoughts and insecurities through her music. Eyre’s aim was to create songs that were genuine and authentic to her as an artist and ‘Let Me Be’ does that perfectly. Composed in her signature and aptly named ‘eerie electro-pop’ style, ‘Let Me Be’ combines a mixture of undulating synth lines with heavy percussion and delicate melodies that make for a complex and haunting soundscape that’s evocative of Matilda Eyre’s beautiful yet softly sinister sound which will be sure to carry on into her upcoming debut EP, Suleika.
