Meagan De Lima is a Toronto-based singer-songwriter crafting R&B music that comes from a place of heart-centered sweetness and compassion. At the core of much of her music is her family’s rich cultural and musical heritage and this theme comes to the fore in new single ‘Queen’. It’s a special homage to her mother who is nothing short of a modern day heroine.

Here, the young artist tells us exactly why:

“I love my mom. I made this song to shine a light on her heart, and the ferocity and resiliency that makes her march to the beat of her own drum. My mom not only inspires me as a passionate mother of three and a South Asian immigrant to Canada but also because of the mountains she’s climbed later in life, too. She is a breast cancer survivor, played a support role to my father when he was diagnosed a year later, and so much more. I am grateful to have had her to look up to not only as a mom but as a best friend and role model to lean on when times got tough. I want to dedicate this song not only to her but to the dynamic and fierce people we all have in our lives that inspire us and show us what genuine love and strength are made of.”

Alongside her producer Mark Pelli (Sabrina Claudio, Chris Brown, Trey Songs, Jojo), Meagan delivers a sumptuous sound that blends contemporary R&B with acoustic soul that is warm, earthy and lush. Ultimately, this is a song that celebrates the legacy of mothers and their infinite amount of love, strength, and resilience. It honours the queens that shaped us into who we are today.

About

Meagan De Lima is deeply influenced by her family's rich cultural history: both sets of her grandparents originated from Goa, India, and Meagan's parents were born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya. Her grandfathers were professional jazz musicians who toured with big bands in India, Africa, and later, Canada, when they immigrated in the ’60s. This formed her natural affinity for music at a young age.

Throughout her younger years, Meagan De Lima soaked up the sounds of R&B, soul, and household jazz. She also immediately fell in love with singing; belting out songs by Toni Braxton, TLC and Destiny’s Child (among others) in her childhood living room. Music was always a safe harbour and a cathartic outlet for her, helping to guide her through mental health challenges, to reconcile her parent's health battles during her teenage years, and to find the silver lining in constant change as a defiantly resilient songwriter. Her records are at equal turns vulnerable and empowering, by being universal and relatable to anyone dealing with similar personal struggles and longing to find strength in the scars rendered by modern life.

Highlights of her career so far include performing for President Barack Obama, at the Invictus Games, and at Canadian Music Week, opening for Kehlani with the group TRP.P at Pride Festival, and singing the Canadian and American national anthems for the Blue Jays. She was awarded Canada’s Top Artist for Social Change for creating her song ‘You Can’, which focused on mental health awareness (judges included Deborah Cox, Director X, Tegan and Sara and The Queen Priyanka). She acted, composed and performed in the feature film Learn to Swim, which premiered at TIFF 2021.

As an independent artist, Meagan landed on Amazon Music's The High End chart in fifteen countries, as well as garnering esteemed placements on playlists which included Spotify's New Music Friday, Fresh Finds, Mood Ring and Just Vibing.

Meagan De Lima is hopeful for the future, which includes releasing her debut EP via AWAL in Autumn 2022.
