Helsinki’s unstoppable Drug Store Raid release their debut album, Background Music for Family Arguments. It’s a 35-minute piece of hedonistic escapism, which retells the familiar story of not fitting in but through a new framework of being proud of your unique character. This individuality is reflected in the band’s genre-defying sound that combines post-punk, noise, indie-dance, jazz-funk and no-wave. Composed of a mix of young, hungry musicians, Drug Store Raid thrives on their dynamic range and energy, making them one of the most exciting new acts to emerge out of Finland in recent years

This twelve-track collection is a gritty, satirical exploration of modern life’s absurdities, from navigating personal mental health struggles to grappling with societal pressures and even dealing with something as mundane as sewers. Drawing influences from iconic bands like Talking Heads, The Birthday Party, Swans, and even Madonna, the album skillfully blends humor, irony, and youthful rebellion with moments of genuine introspection. Each song tackles themes like fitting in, societal critique, and the trials of self-identity, all while maintaining an infectious energy that’s hard to ignore. Tracks like ‘Vi Är Finnjävlar’ dive into the complexity of modern Finnish identity, while ‘I Wanna Be a Hipster’ humorously dissects the world of artsy subcultures. Stories of ‘Suzy’ or ‘Americana’ gets you to wavey spaces while ‘Fashion Fashion’ conjures up absurdist fantasies of robbing a H&M with a banana.

An incendiary touch point in the album is focus track ‘Gutter’ - a takes-no-prisoners track that exposes the fierce side of this band. As they say, “Gutter is a song about God, violence, water parks, sharks and bleach. This is no post-punk jolly happy tune, this is death! End is here, so you gotta get away!”

The album plays with genres and tones, ensuring that no two songs sound alike, yet it all fits into the rebellious spirit of the band. It’s a declaration of identity, struggle, and humor. Drug Store Raid taps into the angst and energy of today’s youth, while poking fun at modern subcultures like hipsters and artsy types. With its raw, unfiltered sound, Background Music for Family Arguments is both a cathartic release and a soundtrack for the discontented.
