Songwriter Wayne Hector thinks One Direction might mature into indie sound

Songwriter Wayne Hector believes One Direction's sound may mature further in the coming years.

The band seemingly went slightly more rock on their 2013 album 'Midnight Memories' as they left pure pop behind.

Songsmith Hector, who has written for the band as well as the likes of Olly Murs and Nicki Minaj, said that the 'Best Song Ever' group could "mature" soon.

He told the Guardian in an article about pop acts gaining an indie edge:

"Back in the 90s you could write about pure love. But now it has to have substance. Everyone wants songs to be slightly cooler. Bands still want pop, but it has to have some kind of edge.

"One Direction working with Justin from the Vaccines proves that they want to add a little bit of indie to their sound too. They have one more album to go [in order to] bring people along with them, and then they can get past that point, then they could mature."
