One Direction have lauded their fans after winning this year's MTV's Hottest Summer Superstar poll.

The broadcaster had been asking fans to vote via Twitter for who they think is the top music act of the summer.

One Direction, who led the poll since it opened a number of weeks ago, have won it for a second year in a row after gaining over 56 million votes.

Speaking in a video after the results were announced, singer Louis Tomlinson said:

"We are absolutely over the moon and we realise that obviously we couldn't do this without you, so thank you so much for all your votes. You guys are the best fans in the world."

In second place on the list is Justin Bieber with 47.4 million votes, whilst Lana Del Rey is third with just over 26 million nods.

Other names in the mix include Lady Gaga at No.4, 5 Seconds of Summer at No.5 and Nicki Minaj at No.7.
