One Direction's surprise new single has topped iTunes charts across the world.

The boyband unleashed the track 'Drag Me Down' this morning (July 31) with no prior notice.

The song is the first piece of music released by the group since the departure of Zayn Malik in March.

Fans, however, have lapped up the new single, which seems to channel a more mature sound.

At the time of writing, 'Drag Me Down' is already No.1 on iTunes charts in the UK and the US.

It is also lording over lists in the likes of Australia, Brazil and Canada.

The song is the first track to be taken from One Direction's upcoming fifth album.
