One Direction land midweek No.1 but battle Rihanna to stay there

Boyband One Direction have scored a No.1 single in the UK midweek chart update with their new offering, 'Live While We're Young'.

Member Louis Tomlinson may have admitted to being nervous about the commercial success of the song, but it seems as though it has been incredibly popular among the group's fans as it took the top spot over Rihanna's 'Diamonds', which has now charted at No.2.

Tomlinson tweeted a message of thanks to his followers earlier today (October 3) for helping get the track to No.1: "Amazing to know we are number 1 in the midweeks but we have to keep pushing guys ! Rihanna is catching up!"

According to the Official Charts Company, there are currently less than 250 copies separating One Direction from Rihanna so it will be a very close race when the positions are confirmed this coming Sunday (October 7).

Elsewhere in the UK Top 40, Ellie Goulding has debuted at No.4 with 'Anything Could Happen', Jason Mraz's 'I Won't Give Up' has climbed an impressive 17 places to No.6, and Dappy's 'Good Intentions' has dropped 10 to No.30.
