One Direction film tops US box office

One Direction have seen their new film This Is Us top the box offices in the US and Canada.

The movie raked in $17m (£10.9m) over the weekend as the British-Irish boyband continue to stake their claim for world domination.

The flick beat off competition from the previous box office No.1 Lee Daniels' The Butler - but only just.

In fact, similar films from Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus - released in 2011 and 2008 respectively - achieved better opening weekend takings in North America.

Bieber's Never Say Never bagged $29.5m (£19m) during its first weekend, whilst Cyrus's Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert movie took in $31.1m (£20m).

One Direction meanwhile launched This Is Us recently with two premieres in London and New York.
