One Direction have topped this year's MTV Stars poll.

The music organisation have been asking fans to tweet the name of their favourite artist of 2013 in an effort to find the year's hottest act.

The poll has been running for a number of weeks but today (December 21) it was revealed that One Direction have come first.

They amassed tens of millions of votes to beat off the likes of Justin Bieber and Ke$ha, who finished second and third respectively.

One Direction gained 40,874,744 tweets whilst Bieber notched up 40,466,390.

Other highly charting names include 30 Seconds To Mars in fourth and The Wanted, who claimed fifth place.
