Italian psych-folk-rock pioneers, Psychopathic Romantics are putting some deep and philosophical questions on the table with the concepts of their new song, The Gathering’. Asking whether or not music has the ability to awaken the conscience or make us aware, this innovative band are hoping that the arts still play a role in modern society.

With the simple and ‘romantic’ view that music can save the world, Psychopathic Romantics are no regular band. Creating a unique concoction of acoustic, folk-infused, down tempo psych-punk, the group use a number of alternative instruments, putting down the guitars and replacing them with the bouzouki, mandolin and Indian harmonium. These specialist sounds are further complimented by warm deep, evocative vocals, setting Psychopathic Romantics apart from the crowd.

'The Gathering’, is the new single taken from the album Bread and Circuses (originally released in 2015), which tackles the difficult, yet current issues of social injustice, inequality and discrimination. With an original and conceptual music video featuring characters made from mops and ping-pong balls, the dark and thought-provoking aura of ‘The Gathering’ is accompanied by a contrasting piece of visual humour and relevance. Jason Small, of the Small Music Review, even noted that ‘The Gathering stands out with an almost eerie melody that really sinks into the mind.’

Whilst it may seem unusual, due to the song’s current context, ‘The Gathering’ is being released two years after the publication of the album, Bread and Circuses, because its social relevance is as, if not more pertinent now than it was then.

Interestingly, due to a number of line-up changes, Psychopathic Romantics operate without a full-time drummer, but in some ways, this allows the creativity of the group to flow more easily, with all members contributing towards the rhythm sections in their songs. Although the band originates from Italy, their front-man ‘Dust’ is an American songwriter who came to the country in 2002. He heard ‘Wish You Were Here’ being played from the back room of a bar, where he found a drummer-less band performing the classic song. It wasn’t long before Dust introduced himself and won the position of drummer. Since then, Dust and bass player, Vincenzo Tancredi, left this band to form Psychopathic Romantics, with Dust advancing to the position of singer and acoustic guitar player. To add to this, the band even built their own recording studio.
