Berlin duo, Feline and Strange have forged their own niche within the busy world of musical genres, pioneering a brand of electro-wave cabaret that borrows much of its sound from the aesthetics of classical compositions, yet it is punched out with an eccentric punk attitude. Now, the pair are releasing their new album, Out, an evocative and eclectic collection of ‘aggressive and depressive’ songs that epitomises the style of Feline and Strange.

Taking their audience on an unpredictable sonic journey, Feline and Strange shift between styles without warning, creating a jarring, yet intriguing listening experience that often juxtaposes huge silences with wild rants and maelstroms of unique instrumentation. Consisting of the multi-talented Feline Lang (opera and tango singer/ director, multimedia artist, vocalist and pianist) who has been described as ‘One of Germany´s most flamboyant ladies in the music-scene’ (Brigitte), and Christoph Klemke (punk drummer, sound designer, percussionist and orchestra cellist), the pair are conquering new grounds when it comes to musical orientation. With one of them from East Germany and one from West, drastic cultural influences collide in a fusion of sound that screams experimentation and the pushing of boundaries.

However, the music of Feline and Strange becomes more intriguing still, once you know the back story: The band are extraterrestrials, transferred centuries ago to Earth with partial amnesia and reborn into new human bodies. Their music serves to collect members for their crew and they don’t know their original mission, but assume they must report home. Yet lately they have changed sides, conspiring against Earth’s invasion, having warmed to the planet and its inhabitants.

Yet the back story of the band is not their only quirk; Christoph plays a fold-up cello which he made himself after cutting an electrical cello into 3 pieces in order to transport it as carry-on luggage, whilst Brian Viglione, studio musician and co-producer who contributed to the album, even plays a dumpster for percussion on the record.

The duo’s upcoming album, Out, was produced by Jason Rubal (Amanda Palmer, Robert Smith, Garbage) and was written in just two weeks by Feline during a residency in Marseille. Her world turned in this time from a Germany welcoming thousands of refugees with open arms, to a world wide political hate crisis, thus explaining the uninhibited cynical rage and the terrible sadness in these 11 epic songs. Inspired by a wide range of topics, the music of Feline and Strange stands by itself, drawing upon human feelings, political and feminist issues.

With a sound described as ‘Nina Hagen meets Depeche Mode and Amanda Palmer’ each song is a little opera within Feline and Strange’s hilarious dystopian tragedy.
