Brian Eno-Blessed Belle Chen Rips Classical Music Out of Tradition Back into Present with New Album

“Original and provocative” – Brian Eno (NOISE Festival 2014)

Artist: Belle Chen
Album:  Mademoiselle
Release Date: October 11th

The hugely acclaimed Belle Chen returns with her new album, Mademoiselle, and a new direction after finding inspiration through adversity during a short stay in Paris. Belle has received significant press from across the artistic spectrum: BBC Radio 3; 6 Music; Classic FM; and BBC China have all given Belle coverage which has led to plaudits from the likes of Brian Eno, Max Reinhardt, and James Rhodes. Her live performances have led Belle to wowing audiences at the BBC Introducing Stage at 2016’s Latitude Festival; BBC3’s 70th Anniversary show at the prestigious Royal Festival Hall, whilst upcoming shows at London Bloomsbury Festival will showcase the fusing of Belle’s unique sound with a dancer and a live VJ.

The Royal Academy of Music-trained musician has already established herself as one of the most innovative cross-genre artists in recent years, using cutting-edge electronic production alongside classical instrumentation forged through inspiration from the likes of Brian Eno, Frank Zappa and Frédéric Chopin.

Belle’s new release, ‘Mademoiselle’, released on October 11th, is something of a departure from her previous recordings ('Listen, London' (2014) and 'Mediterranean Sounds' (2016)) which have seen her travel the world and reflect her surroundings in overlapping textures of sound. After fleeing to a Parisian flat to collect her thoughts during a particularly difficult time in her life, she found an outlet in her music which proved both therapeutic and profoundly emotional.

Created over those four days, the following six months saw the painstaking work of both Belle and her co-producer, Iain Chambers, in using an approach which was informed as much by the techniques of cutting-edge electronica, sound art, improvisation and more recognisably classical techniques. Belle’s journeys around the world are pivotal in creating her expansive soundscapes, this album also being a sonic travelogue of her experience in Paris.

At the forefront of a new musical movement which inspires, excites and confounds expectations, Belle Chen has reinvented what classical music can mean. She now begins a new phase of her career which promises to take us on a journey which is cinematic, emotional and guaranteed to resonate in the minds of listeners across a multitude of genres and artistic disciplines.

On 18th and 21st October Belle Chen will be performing live in London at the Bloomsbury Festival with accompanying dancer, sound art and live VJ (video jockey).
