Taking lockdown as their cue to gather their thoughts and collective talents in a remote farmhouse to write and record their new EP, the Telford, West Midlands-based Four Crooks are now unleashing the results to the world. Black Magic, consisting of the title track plus Feel Alright and Paranoia captures the raw urgency and gritty realness of the likes of Black Keys and early Arctic Monkeys yet has a power and potency all of its own, introducing a band who have dealt with both the law and their own demons to perfectly hone their craft.

Four Crooks is Dave Morris (vocals/guitar); Eamonn Russell (guitar); Toby Barnett (bass) and Dan Quinton-Jones (drums), four working-class guys who are the much-needed blast of real indie rock that a world becoming dazed by studio trickery and effects is crying out for. The band have never followed the squeaky-clean route of so many indie bands – Eamonn first met Dave as he was being kicked out of a bar after an altercation with the manager about payment for a gig. Helping him carry his gear home they quickly realised that they shared a common bond for music and how it should be performed – they’ve never looked back, forming a band with Toby and Dan and then taking lockdown as their opportunity to write and record in a remote farmhouse. Free from distractions, the results can be heard on their new EP, Black Magic, a trio of tracks which are honest about their mental health and relationship battles but which glow with stinging guitars and raw grooves.

Black Magic by Four Crooks is led by the title track, a meditation on the addictive qualities of women and substances of all kinds – both a warning and a celebration of everything that can get you high and take hold of your senses. Black Magic EP also features Feel Alright, a song of redemption which sees someone working their way through a difficult relationship and waking out with their head held high, and Paranoia, a thudding, far heavier track which looks at how it really feels to be trapped mentally with feelings of anxiety and doubt. Keeping it real to a whole new level, Four Crooks are rock n roll to the very core.
