Rihanna: 'I think I can inspire a lot of young women to be themselves'

'Work' songstress Rihanna stopped by the New Jersey Performing Arts Center on Friday evening for the exciting annual Black Girls Rock! event.

This event helps to promote the arts for young women of colour as well as encourages dialogue and analysis of the ways women of colour are portrayed in the media. Rihanna received the Rock Star Award and gave an inspiring speech to the audience.

"Thank you so much for celebrating us in a world that doesn't celebrate us enough," she told crowd. "The minute you learn to love yourself, you will not want to be anybody else. Role model is not the title they like to give me…but I think I can inspire a lot of young women to be themselves and that is half the battle. Hopefully one day I'll be raising my own little black girl who rocks."

The Black Girls Rock! ceremony is set to air this coming Tuesday on BET in the USA from 8pm.
