Paula Patton has formally asked to be divorced from Robin Thicke.

The celebrity duo split up earlier this year after being together for years.

TMZ have confirmed that Patton has filed for divorce from the singer, citing "irreconcilable differences".

The actress has asked for joint physical and legal custody of their four-year-old son Julian.

The news will be a blow to Thicke, who publicly spoke of his desire to win back his estranged wife.

The soulful singer even released the album 'Paula', which contained tracks such as 'Get Her Back'.

The duo met each as teens and married in 2005.
