Jazz newcomers, Rich Meehan Trio release their brilliant debut EP Suite Antique with the stunning new single “Carilion”. The follow up to the previous singles to be taken from the new EP, “Gymnopedie” & “Prelude”, the band have gained major support from Jazz FM (Dinner Jazz track of the week), Clout, Backseat Mafia and BBC Introducing which has seen them make a meteoric rise, building momentum towards the EP’s release.

A collection of 5 tracks which showcase a unique contemporary jazz sound, fusing splashes of classical piano and dappled electronics with their jazz exploits, Suite Antique is a rich sonic experience with astounding musicianship and innovative composition on display.

The new single “Carillon” is a prime example of this. Vibrant, uplifting, experimental and undeniably beautiful “Carillon” is complex and musically intense with an unrelenting pace to the movement of the music with key changes and layers of overlapping melodies. Opening with a bouncing, jubilant piano which intertwines with the syncopated bass line and gentle drums, the track quickly sets an uptempo yet light summery tone as shuffling electronics flutter around the instrumentation.

Talking about “Carillon” Rich explains:
“When I was working on writing the piece, it was the Carillon’s opening riff that first clicked, as did the concept of losing a half-beat from the rhythmic metre every so often. What I love about this movement is the way elements which belong in very different worlds, jazz, drum’n'bass, classical, ragtime and even African polyrhythm all come together to make something which is very much itself.”

Expanding to talk more in depth about the Suite Antique EP as a whole, Rich continues:
“Writing what has become the EP "Suite Antique" was a chance to write for myself as a pianist, something I hadn’t really done since school. This meant that for the first time in what seemed like forever, I also got to compose in my own voice, something I felt I didn’t really know until it began forming. This came from not submitting to one style or another. It has been interesting that when playing it live that listeners find different frameworks from their own experience as a way of making sense of the music. When generating the material, it was really inspiring to think of what Paul Glover’s drumming, James Newman’s bass playing and particularly Jon Bierman’s completely genre-free electronics might add. I feel that the work is best heard as one single piece, rather than a collection of five short ones, and we hope it finds its audience.”

Mixed by acclaimed, Mercury-nominated producer Gerry Diver (Sam Lee, Graham Coxon, Tom Robinson etc.) the new single exudes professionalism and continues to showcase a jazz trio with limitless potential.
