On Thursday 5th May many voters in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland will head to the polls to elect their new local representatives.

With a vast number of seats being contested, the results are likely to paint a vivid picture of the national mood for the first time since the 2019 snap general election.

But how do the local elections work, what are the key areas to look out for and what is the best way to keep up to date as the results unfold.

Here’s a breakdown of how to follow all the action with Sky News

On Thursday 5th May, following Sky News at Ten, Jonathan Samuels will present Vote 2022 - a special overnight results programme from 11pm through to 5am on Friday. Viewers can enjoy the excitement of a full on-screen results service highlighting every result as it happens. Samuels will be accompanied by Sky News’ Deputy Political Editor Sam Coates, Elections Analyst Professor Michael Thrasher and correspondents in key areas. As the night unfolds, Sky News’ Business Correspondent Helen-Ann Smith will bring expertise and analysis of the data.

On Friday morning viewers will get a full digest and explanation of the story so far, with special editions of The Early Rundown, with Kamali Melbourne (5am-7am), followed by Kay Burley (7am-10am) and Ian King Live (10am-11am).

As results continue, from 11am-7pm Sophy Ridge will present a follow up edition of Vote 2022 with rolling coverage of the story from across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Alongside her will be Sky News’ Political Editor Beth Rigby, Elections Analyst Professor Michael Thrasher and once again, trusted correspondents in key voting areas across the UK. Sky News’ Economics and Data Editor Ed Conway will add depth to the emerging picture from the Sky News Centre.

Dermot Murnaghan will present the third edition of Vote 2022 from 7pm-10pm on Friday, with Jayne Secker presenting from Belfast as well as correspondents at all three counts, right through until the final decisive results are in.

On Saturday morning Sophy Ridge, Sam Coates and Jayne Secker will have full coverage of any late results and all the fallout, bringing Vote 2022 to a close from 10am-7pm.
