Sky News has received nine nominations at the 2023 RTS Television Journalism Awards, including the prestigious News Channel of the Year, which it has won consecutively for the last five years.

John Ryley, Head of Sky News, said: “In what was a relentless year for newsrooms it’s fantastic to see Sky News’ compelling journalism rewarded with nine nominations. Independent, eyewitness reporting that gets to the heart of the story was incredibly important throughout 2022. Sky News has been fact-finding, truth-telling and truth-seeking, and once again has demonstrated that public service journalism cannot be left solely to the public service news organisations.”

Sky News RTS TV Journalism nominations:

News Channel of the Year
Network Television Journalist of the Year – Stuart Ramsay
Network Daily News Programme of the Year – Sky News at Ten
International News Coverage – Ukraine: On the Frontline
Home News Coverage – Violence against Women and Girls
Political Journalist of the Year – Beth Rigby
Interview of the Year – Beth Rigby (Boris Johnson) & Jason Farrell (Leona Whitworth)
Young Talent of the Year – Inzamam Rashid
Special correspondent Stuart Ramsay will contend for the highly sought-after Television Journalist of the Year Award. Last February, Ramsay and his crew were ambushed and shot near Kyiv in the early stages of the war. The team’s harrowing report of the incident has been viewed more than five million times on YouTube.  Ramsay has also reported on the devastating floods in Pakistan and travelled to the Darien Gap in South America to follow the journey of the deadly jungle trek where families risk their lives to reach America.

Sky News has had a crew on the ground in Ukraine since the invasion began. This commitment to eyewitness reporting has been rewarded with a nomination in the International News category.

Home affairs editor Jason Farrell’s powerful interview with a victim of a grooming gang is one of two nominations for Interview of the Year. Leona Whitworth was sold to men for sex when she was 13 years old by a woman she thought loved her – one of her abusers was allegedly a serving police officer. Whitworth waived her anonymity to talk to Farrell about the ordeal she suffered for months at the hands of her abusers.

Farrell’s string of revealing exclusive interviews and investigations into sexual abuse has also collected a nomination in the Home News category.

Sky News political editor Beth Rigby, who will also contend for Political Journalist of the Year, has received a nomination for her interview with Boris Johnson. The uncomfortable encounter at the Royal Free Hospital last January was a defining moment in the undoing of the former Prime Minister. Rigby’s persistent and clever questioning pushed Johnson to a point where he physically showed the strain. Johnson lowered his head when Rigby pressed him on having to apologise to the Queen for a party that took place on the eve of her husband’s funeral.

Inzamam Rashid has been rewarded for an excellent 2022 with a nomination for Young Talent of the Year. Rashid has covered big stories in the North-West region, securing exclusive access and interviews following the tragic death of Awaab Ishak, and investigating the lack of support for drug users leaving the prison system. He has also reported on the impact of the Cost-of-Living crisis in struggling communities and travelled to Afghanistan to report on the devastating earthquake.

Winners will be announced at the RTS TV Journalism Awards on Wednesday 1st March 2023
