Sam Smith: 'People talk about me and say I don't want to be a spokesperson for the gay community'

British singer Sam Smith has revealed that as an openly gay man in the music industry, he is expected to be some kind of role model, but doesn't want to be forced to just speak for the gay community and wants to be a spokesperson for people from all walks of life.

During a new interview with Ellen DeGeneres, the superstar admitted that he really does want to be a spokesperson, but doesn't want it to be limited to the LGBT community:

"I'm a singer and a song writer. I get upset sometimes because I don't talk about it too much. People say, he doesn't want to be a spokesperson for the gay community. I do, of course I do, but I want to be a spokesperson for everyone. You know straight people, gay people, bisexual. I don't want it to be limited."

The 'Like I Can' hitmaker went onto add that he was aware of his sexual orientation from a young age and his mother thought she knew when he was just 3-years-old:

"It didn't feel like a coming out. I came out when I was like four years old. My mum said she knew when I was, like, three. I kind of just felt like I needed to mention it before I released the record so people knew what it was about. And it felt like a brave thing to do as well I wanted to do it before because if I did it afterwards people probably would have thought I was lying just to sell records."
