Sam Smith was forced to give a Billboard Music Awards acceptance speech entirely using a cue cards.

The singer is currently out of action after recently suffering a vocal cord haemorrhage.

He bagged the Top Male Artist prize at Billboard's awards ceremony on Sunday (May 17).

Smith couldn't attend in person, but he filmed a pre-recorded speech that saw the silent singer hold up cards with messages on them.

He thanked Billboard and his fans for the prize, as well as giving funny messages to stars in the crowd.

He asked Taylor Swift to put '$100 on black' at a casino and spoke about Nicki Minaj's backside.

Smith recently had an operation in the US for his vocal ailment.
